'Representing conflict now'
Director of the Tim Hetherington trust, Stephen Mayes, will be part of an upcoming event at the Imperial War Museum (IWM) in London, focusing on the representation of conflict. Titled ‘Representing Conflict Now’ the event which takes place on Saturday 17th June 2017 will be host to a series of installations, performances and debates. Each activity will examine how art can challenge social attitudes towards war and justice.
Mayes will be convening the ‘Art and Terror’ discussion which aims to answer the following questions: How can art represent a domestic experience of terror as a consequence of distant war? How can it help us to understand legal procedures enacted upon individuals for reasons of international security, which can in themselves be acts of terror? As part of the discussion, Mayes will be joined by writer and academic Fred Ritchin, IWM research curator Hilary Roberts, Professor of Visual Culture Eyal Weizman, academic Christopher Stewart and photographer Diana Matar.
The event is part of a broader initiative which supports contemporary conflict photography, which includes exhibitions that are currently on display that focus on Guantanamo Bay and Syria. For more information and to book tickets, please visit the IWM webpage HERE
