Visionary Award 2017 Nominees: Laia Abril
Shortlisted for the Visionary Award from the Tim Hetherington Trust 2017
A History Of Misogyny, chapter two: On Hysteria
The first chapter in Laia Abril’s extraordinary study of misogyny dealt with the physical “collateral damage” caused to women by the denial of access to abortion. Shown as part of the Arles photo festival 2016 the work was met with a shock of recognition of the harsh realities depicted and Abril’s artistic achievement in creating a “conceptual map” of the damage to women and their lives. Chapter two proposed for the Visionary Award moves the study into psychological territory with an examination of hysteria, of one of the oldest “diagnosed” conditions with near exclusive application to women’s social behaviours. Abril has proven herself well able to undertake this intangible issue in her powerful visual language.
