"Get Closer"

International Center for Photography, New York, January, 2014

For each of the 100 days following the centenary of Robert Capa's birth and leading up to the opening of "Capa In Color" at the International Center of Photography in New York, Magnum paired one of Capa's images with another made by a renowned photographer that visually "responds" to the Capa picture. Tim Hetherington's image of Luke Navarro sleeping (Afghanistan, Korengal Valley, Kunar Province, June 2008) was paired with Robert Capa's image of an American soldier resting (Italy, Near Cassino, January,1944). "We don't know that Tim Hetherington saw Capa's 1944 image of a soldier sleeping in Cassino, Italy, but it's clear that both recognized this most ordinary and least dramatic human activity as an integral part of conflict.  The metaphor of sleep and death is as old as literature so maybe it's not surprising that it should recur in these modern representations of war.  Tim ran with the motif and in his series "Sleeping Soldiers" (Afghanistan 2008) he developed a deeper meditation on masculinity and vulnerability, reflecting on the incongruity of peace in conflict and requiring us to think more deeply about the role of men in the performance of war."
