3rd Tim Hetherington Award
The third Tim Hetherington Award receipient was awarded to Thomas Alieu. An Award ceremony was held in Freetown and organized by Peter Penfold, friend and former High Commissioner of Sierra Leone. A letter of congratulations and inspiration was sent from Alistair and Judith Hetherington. At the ceremony there was a screening of Sebastian Junger's film- "Which Way is the Front Line from Here: Life and Time of Tim Hetherington." Attended by many of Tim's friends and photographers from the local Photographer's Association started and mentored by Tim.
Letter from Peter Penfold: "Dear Judith, Thank you for your message to Thomas Alieu, the winner of The Tim Hetherington Award for 2013. I hosted the award ceremony at the Family Kingdom on 15 January. Over 150 people attended, including various dignatories and pupils from many schools in Freetown, including of course the Milton Margai School for the Blind. Also present were previous Tim Hetherington Awardees, including Osman Kamara and Alie Mansaray who provided some of the music for the occasion. The British High Commmissioner Peter West and his wife and two former Foreign Ministers and Chief Justice helped present the prizes and awards to Thomas Alieu. Thomas made a very moving acceptance speech noting the influence that Tim had had on him in striving to help the blind and disabled. Thomas himself is blind and is now the Director of the Vocationnal Institute for the Blind and Disabled in Freetown. The ceremony had an added poignancy by the first showing in Sierra Leone of the film, Which Way is the Front Line from Here? - the Life and Time of Tim Hetherington (thanks to Jack Latham). The whole audience were visibly moved by the film, some in tears. Thanks are due to Alhaji Jawad of the Family Kingdom and Dr Dumbuya of the Dorothy Springer Trust for helping me organise the event which was widely covered on the television and radio and in the press. Best wishes to you and Alastair, Peter"
